ST. LOUIS — An eight-year-old student showed up at school on Tuesday with a bloody ankle, and the school, concerned the student was grazed with a bullet, sent the child to the hospital.

As it turns out, the blood on the ankle was actually the child’s mother’s blood.

Police say the mom was warming up her car when a suspect, or suspects, tried to steal the car. When she confronted them, they shot her in the leg in front of her child.

The child attends St. Louis Language Immersion School. The mother is in the hospital in stable condition.

Police say that the investigation into this shooting is ongoing.  FOX 4 will continue to monitor developments in this story through FOX 4 sister station, KTVI in St. Louis. Refresh this page for updates.
