JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. -- Johnson County residents approved local option budgets meaning they won't lose millions of dollars in local funding.

The local option budgets were put into place to act as supplemental funding for schools. Schools rely on the money after a massive budget shortfall.

The approval will maintain local funding in the Olathe, Blue Valley, Shawnee Mission and De Soto school districts. It will also increase funding for the Gardner Edgerton school district.

With the approval, school districts won't have to make tough budget decisions such as cutting school programs or increasing classroom sizes.

In the Shawnee Mission school district voters also approved a $200 million bond to help build five new elementary schools and enhance technology.
