LAWRENCE, Kan. — Kansas basketball assistant coach Jerrance Howard was arrested and fined for misdemeanor possession of marijuana last July, but his boss, Bill Self, didn’t find out about it until Wednesday, Feb. 11.

Both facts have landed Howard in hot water with a two-week suspension.

FOX 4’s Al Wallace attended a news conference in Lawrence and reports it was obvious the subject is unsettling to Coach Self.

Howard played for Self at Illinois and is now in his second year as an assistant at KU.

Getting arrested for possession of marijuana was bad enough, but keeping it a secret for almost six months made it even worse.

“I am disappointed, but on one front. I mean just to be real candid, I’m disappointed on one front. I didn’t know about it. I love the guy and the fact that I didn’t know about it, regardless of what circumstances surrounded it is disappointing to me. But we’re working on it. We’ll handle it like we should. He’ll handle it like he should and move forward,” Self said.
