KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The YMCA of Greater Kansas City is partnering with "Head Start" to open a preschool in Columbus Park.

The YMCA  said they hope to open the preschool the first week of March. According to the YMCA, 12 children are enrolled in the program already, and there are still spots open.

There will be two classrooms at the school. The first of those two is complete.

The YMCA said the preschool will be open Monday through Thursday and split into two half-day programs. The program has enough space in each room for 13 children in the morning session and 13 children in the afternoon session.

"Families have been waiting," Patty Lucas of YMCA said. "With the language barriers, it's been a little bit difficult to get families to come in, but Shannon our family advocate has been working with those families and working with translators and interpreters to get families to come in and help ease the process of the application."

The program will cater to children three to five years old and will be free for low-income families because the YMCA has a partnership with Head Start.
