INDEPENDENCE, Mo - There's a buzz in the metro about one of the community's favorite soccer teams. The Missouri Comets scored its 20th win on Sunday to remain undefeated headed into the playoffs, but for many in the stands, the game was about a lot more than just the score.
There is no age limit at the Independence Events Center, every single fan is yelling, "go Comets!" If you're trying to find an empty seat, don't hold your breath. Hundreds , both young and old, pack the place to cheer on their favorite team.
"It's amazing here!" fan Luke Schneider said. "I didn't know they'd be undefeated this year; I thought this would never happen."
This is the Comet's first year being a part of the Major Arena Soccer League, it's a brand new 24-team league with some of the best players from around the country.
"It's an incredible feeling, I don't know the words to describe how I feel about it. It's just a different feeling. We're all happy and blessed to be part of it," Comets coach Vlatko Andonovski said.
So what's the secret to the Comets' 20 game win streak?
"Great players, they have incredibly great players. They work well together, good chemistry," fan Rick Bendorf said.
Good chemistry, true, but if you ask the players, it's seeing the families in the stands cheer them on.
"This is the best place to play. It's the best fans around, the atmosphere you can't beat it. We've had the fans support like no one else. We can't say enough about these fans, they're the best," Comets goalie Danny Waltman said.
The Comets will play in the Divisional Final against the winner of the Milwaukee Wave vs. Chicago Mustangs. That game will be at the Independence Events Center at 7 p.m. on March 12.
