Three arrested but unclear if they’re connected to critical shooting of WyCo. deputy

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- A deputy is listed in critical condition after being shot multiple times early Wednesday morning by armed robbers. Police said that a Wyandotte County sheriff's deputy walked in to 7-Eleven off Shawnee Drive and  635 around 1 a.m. to get something after getting off work.

The deputy was inside at the counter when three men walked into the convenience store. Police said they think these men were planning to rob the store and ended up shooting the off-duty deputy. It was not clear if there had been a struggle between the suspects and the deputy prior to the shooting.robberies

The suspects are thought to be involved in other overnight robberies including two in KCMO and one in KCK.

According to police, there was gun fire at two of the robbery locations. Two people were injured at the robbery at 79th and Wornall. Police said the injuries were minor.

Police said that three armed suspects entered the Phillips 66 at 79th and Wornall and demanded money from the registers and the safe. An unknown amount of money was taken from the businesses. Shots were fired, and one employee was struck by a bullet. One of the suspects hit the other employee in the head multiple times with a hand gun. Police said the suspects headed south away from the scene.

Another armed robbery took place at Shayanz EX Shop at 85th and Woodland, according to police. Police said one of  the two employees in the business was pistol whipped when  ordered to get on the ground. A shot was fired at the ground near the victims. Police said the suspect allegedly stole money from the register and fired shots into the air as they left the scene.

All morning, law enforcement has been looking for the suspects, focusing their search on the entire Turner neighborhood of, Kansas City, Kan., with a specific concentration near the Frito-Lay plant, 2040 S 45th Street on the western edge of the Turner area. Police said they located the abandon vehicle near the Frito Lay plant . Police from Kansas City, Mo., were assisting by bringing in a dog from their canine unit to search the area.

Police said the three men who shot the deputy fled the scene of the shooting in a vehicle. Police said they think they were headed north. The sheriff's deputy was transported to the hospital where he was listed in critical condition.


At about 2 a.m. Kansas City, Kan. police reported that one suspect was taken into custody but could not confirm whether the man was connected to the shooting or the armed robberies.

Then around 7 a.m., police reported that two more men were arrested but still could not confirm whether the men were connected to the shooting or the armed robberies. The two men were arrested near 47th and Metropolitan, which is few blocks from the 7-Eleven where the deputy was shot. Wyandotte County Sheriff's Lieutenant Kelli Baliff said they are not certain "if these are the guys."

A helicopter and K-9 units  were on scene helping police investigate. Police are looking at surveillance video.

SWAT teams were on scene searching for the third suspect. The large wooded area that surrounds the distribution plant was surrounded by a heavy police presence.

Police advised that people in the Turner community keep their doors locked and stay on guard.

The Turner School District said they will hold classes today but encouraged everyone to take extra caution while children are getting on the bus. The school district said they will have extra officers on patrol to keep schools safe.
