KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City’s best and brightest entrepreneurs went head-to-head Wednesday night, competing for the attention and the check books of hundreds of investors and venture capitalists from around the metro.

BetaBlox, an organization that helps KC startups succeed, showcased 20 new companies at Union Station for a crowd of more than a thousand people.

“BetaBlox is like a school for startups where their tuition is partial ownership of their company,” explained Weston Bergmann, managing director. “We take five percent in exchange for helping them get off the ground and be on their team, kind of like a board of advisers for the life of their company.”

Each BetaBlox team completed a rigorous and hands-on curriculum of one-one-one consultation, mentorship, classes and collaboration among the alumni of the program.

Wednesday night the teams pitched their ideas Shark Tank style to a room full of people that included representatives from major investment groups and venture capital firms in Kansas City.

So far, BetaBlox has helped 74 startups get off the ground in the last three years. 64 of the business are still in business.
