KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A local tattoo artist is using his talents to help people who have had a mastectomy, and his wife was his inspiration.
Brett Murdock has been in the tattoo business for more than a decade, and he recently posted an ad on Craigslist offering free nipple tattoos to anyone who's had a mastectomy.
"I'm very lucky to have a husband that is as supportive as he is, and as honest and earnest, and just really just available to help, available to help no matter what it takes," said 33-year-old Rachael Frederick, who found a lump in her right breast last year and was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer last May.
She underwent chemotherapy and decided to have a double mastectomy to make sure it didn't spread to her left breast.
"I really hate cancer," said Murdock, "and I will do anything that I can do to kind of fight against all the terrible things that it does."
Her husband of four years, Murdock is a tattoo artist at Waldo`s Darkside Tattoo on Wornall.
He approached her with an idea of tattooing nipples on her breasts after her reconstruction surgery she's having this July.
"It`s not the really important stuff - it`s just the stuff that tends to feel important, like wigs, and make-up, and nipple reconstruction," said Murdock.
He says after seeing what his wife went through, he wants to help her and anyone else going through the same thing -- in the only way he knows how.
Murdock says he's going to offer free nipple tattoos to anyone who has lost their breasts due to a mastectomy. It's his way of helping people and fighting back, giving people something that they've lost.
"Seeing enough people not having what I feel they need to feel whole again," Murdock added.
"I love being his canvas in any other direction so this was just another thing that I was more than happy to do," added Frederick.
Murdock is dedicating his day off --Sundays-- to anyone interested.
