GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. -- Members of the Grain Valley High School marching band are headed to New York City to perform in the 2016 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

A special guest who introduced himself as an "expert" on marching bands made the big announcement to students Tuesday morning.

"For the first time, Grain Valley will represent the state of Missouri  in the 2016 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade," he said.

The parade staff worked secretly with the school to surprise the band.

Grain Valley is one of 10 high schools selected to participate in the parade.

The parade has a total of 10,000 participants of various kinds.    3.5 million people view the parade live along the parade route, and more than 50 million viewers tune in to the television broadcast.
