KANSAS CITY, Kan. — A man in his 70s and three pets were killed in a house fire in the 800 block of Metropolitan on Thursday night. Firefighters arrived to the scene at about 8: 30 p.m. after 911 callers reported heavy smoke coming from the house.

Battalion Chief Larry Grissom said the fire department can’t release the cause of the fire yet, but said the victim was unconscious and unresponsive when taken from the scene. He later died at the hospital.

The fire started in the kitchen and the man was found in a back bedroom. Firefighters say clutter in the home made it difficult to rescue him.

One small dog was saved, but two other dogs and a cat died in the fire. FOX 4 will follow developments with this story and provide updates on Friday as more details are learned.
