EXCELSIOR SPRINGS, Mo. – They’re called the “Mongols Motorcycle Club” -- a self-professed 'one percenter' gang, which according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation is responsible for drug deals and murders.

The motorcycle club will use The Elms Hotel and Spa as their lodging, beginning this Friday night.

Captain Clint Reno with the Excelsior Springs Police Department says he recently attended a meeting with a member of the Mongols Motorcycle Club, which is based in California, but has members coast-to-coast. He says members of that group intend to gather this weekend in Clay County.

“We are adding personnel that weekend, and doing a little preparation, but we don't anticipate any trouble,” he said.

Captain Reno says his department has been assured by the group there will be no problems. Outlaw motorcycle gangs remain in the national spotlight after members of the Bandidos gang were involved in a shootout on Waco, Texas on Sunday.

“I am not sure what the purpose of their meeting is,” Cpt. Reno said.

It’s been the topic of talk around town. Many business owners wouldn’t speak to us on-camera, for fear of glamorizing the Mongols visit, but Kevin Cline doesn’t mind. He is co-owner of the Country Club Barber Shop, and says he doesn’t mind if the Mongols come to town, so long as they’re well behaved.

“I don't think they'll bother anybody. You have all walks of life that ride motorcycles -- bankers, lawyers and every day working people,” he said.

Cpt. Reno says as many as 200 members could come to town, as one of its members calls the metro his home. FOX 4 asked managers of the hotel for a comment, but they didn’t return our calls.
