LIBERTY, Mo. — The Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office identified 52-year-old Jeffrey Paul Alt as the victim in a fatal apartment fire this past Tuesday. Alt lived in a building at Jefferson Park Apartments in the 1200 block of Missouri Court.

The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office says the investigation thus far indicates the fire was accidental, though investigators haven’t been able to rule out an electrical cause, according to a news release.

Fire and rescue crews arrived to the large fire on Tuesday morning at 3:45. A resident reported hearing a large bang and saw flames had engulfed the door across the hall.

“I thought I heard a gunshot and thought maybe it was someone acting stupid when my girlfriend said she saw fire,” Jonathan Kane told FOX 4 on Tuesday. “The apartment across from mine was scorching in flames.”

Firefighters said they believed the fire began on the first floor and rapidly spread the second and third, eventually reaching and burning through the attic. Alt was pulled from the fire, but did not survive. Another person was taken to a hospital for serious burns and smoke inhalation.

The American Red Cross is assisting 34 people who were affected by the fire. Firefighters believe smoke, fire and water destroyed all of their belongings.
