KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A police officer is recovering in the hospital after someone tried to break into her home early Thursday morning near N.E. 47th Street and Denver.

Police said that just before 5 a.m. the officer woke up in her home to the sounds of someone kicking in her door. The officer grabbed her police-issued handgun and prosecutors say she confronted the suspect that was identified as 28-year-old Jon Garcia.

According to court documents, the unnamed off-duty officer told Garcia she was a cop.  Garcia then tried to attack the officer. Investigators said the officer fired two shots and hurt herself in the altercation. The documents also revealed that Garcia asked police what was happening, while being arrested. He also told police that he'd been shot at Rockfest.

Residents who live near N.E. 47th Street and Denver reported there was a large police presence in their neighborhood shortly after the incident and police roped off the area.

Some neighbors who spoke to FOX 4's John Pepitone said they've noticed more drug use in the area, which is leading to more crime.

"It does elevate and there is fear. The perception of fear, of course, is different for each individual, but this is a terrible situation and we are happy that the victim in this matter will be okay," said Sgt. Kari Thompson, KCMO Police.

Garcia has been charged with aggravated assault and attempted burglary.
