KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A man from Independence has died after after crashing into to the side of a moving police van early Wednesday morning.

Police said the van was heading north on Van Brunt when the motorcyclist came from West 31st and broadsided the van around 1:30 a.m. Police said the collision was so strong that it caused the van to spin.

The motorcyclist was transported to the hospital and immediately underwent surgery but  later died from his injuries.

A friend of the victim told FOX 4 the man driving the motorcycle is a father who is in his 30s.

Investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the accident. They said they were not sure if visibility was an issue because storms were in the area around the time of the crash.

Police said their dash cam video clearly shows that they had a green light when the accident occurred, which would mean the motorcyclist ran a red light.
