KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Missouri Department of Transportation reopened the northbound and southbound lanes on I-35 at 152 Highway Monday afternoon after a gas leak caused the road to close for nearly five hours.

According to a tweet from MoDOT, no injuries occurred when a construction crew hit a gas line at about 8:30 a.m. Monday.

There was reportedly an 18-inch hole in a 12-inch main. MGE was shutting off valves to the north and south of the hole to see if it helps the pressure go down.

"What we are doing now by shutting down the highway is eliminating as many of the ignition sources as we can so the crews up there working have a safe environment," Jeff Gardner with KC Scout said. "It's inherently dangerous with the high-pressure gas so we're trying to eliminate the ignition sources as we can."
