LEAVENWORTH, Kan. -- Many school districts provide free summer meals for kids. Leavenworth School District is one of them, but the district office was still closed for the holiday on Monday, which means no free lunch.
During the summer, families can bring their kids to Wollman Park for a free meal provided by the Leavenworth School District. But Monday afternoon, no meals were served.
Four-year-old DaDa just came back a little grumpy and sluggish.
“He was looking and I said well, you can’t get free lunch right now. We have to go home and find you something to eat because ain’t nobody there,” mother Charlotte Taylor said.
Taylor often takes her son to the park for lunch. The Leavenworth School District offers a free meal every day for kids during the summer. But no one from the school showed up Monday afternoon.
“Sometimes when you get to the point where you don’t have anything in there to cook, yeah I’m going to take him to get free lunch,” she said.
The district was closed from July 2 to the seventh, but Taylor says she didn’t know. It was also a surprise for Iris Arnold with the Leavenworth Mission.
“First of the month, we usually get hit pretty hard,” said Arnold.
She provides families with goods collected for the food pantry and says the school’s summer meal program is important to the community.
“Besides the hot meal a church provides, there isn’t another that serves hot meals a day,” Arnold said.
For the first time, the summer meal program is offered at Wollman Park. Taylor lives five minutes away and it’s been a great help, just not on Monday.
The summer meals will kick back up again Tuesday. The website does inform parents that the district offices will be closed July 3 and July 6.
