KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Seven people are still in the hospital Monday morning after being seriously hurt while using fireworks over the weekend.

A spokesperson for the University of Kansas Hospital says the patients range in age from four to 37 years old. Most of them have serious injuries to their hands.

In total 12 people got hurt. Last year, 41 people were injured and six people were admitted to the hospital to be treated for their injuries.

The hospital says sparklers cause the most injuries because they burn so hot.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says more than 200 people per day went to the emergency room in the U.S. in the month surrounding the fourth last year.
