KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Police were on the scene of a shooting Monday night, where they say a man was fatally injured by a gunshot.

Around 9:30 p.m., officers were called to 27th and Elmwood where a man had reportedly been shot in the street. Police later said 50-year-old Jeffrey Joe McDonald was working on his car at the time, which was parked on the side of the street. They said they do not believe McDonald did anything to provoke the shooting.

"Our initial reports are that the gentleman did nothing to incite or have anything to do with what happened," KCMO Police Captain Tim Gaughan said.

Police said McDonald was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, but later died from his injuries.

Neighbors at the scene say McDonald is well-known in the community. Witnesses say he was shot in the head, but as of Monday police would not confirm that information.

Police ask that anyone with information please call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
