KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Four FC Kansas City players were welcomed home from Vancouver, Canada will smiles and cheers. The women played in The World Cup, beating Japan five to two.
"It was amazing, I couldn't believe all those people were there for us, that the whole nation was there supporting us," said Amy Rodriguez.
Saturday, the group had its first practice back in Kansas City with FCKC. They said the excitement of winning The World Cup isn't wearing off anytime soon.
"I remember thinking, man, how does it get better than this? Then we won and it got better," said Lauren Holiday during a press conference on Saturday.
The game pulled in a domestic television audience of 26.7 million people, with Kansas City as the top rated local market.
"We were in The Power and Light District watching the Men's World Cup and doing the chants and going crazy and seeing that environment," said Holiday. "Then, to hear that environment was the same for us is an incredible feeling."
After the big win the players headed to New York for The Ticker Tape Parade. The women have their first game back here in Kansas City on Monday against Houston Dash.
