ST. LOUIS -- Police in St. Louis say that a child shot and killed a teen who attempted to break into a home Thursday in North St. Louis, KTVI reports.

According to KTVI, the 11-year-old child was at home in the 10200 block of Hallwood drive with a 4-year-old girl when the suspect entered the home through an unlocked door.

Police told KTVI that the 11-year-old fired one shot at the suspect from a handgun, which fatally wounded the 16-year-old suspect.

KTVI reports that the second suspect fled the scene when they heard the shots, but police have since taken the suspect into custody.

It is unclear why the children were home alone. Neither of the children were injured, according to KTVI.

According to KTVI, the mother of the children bought the gun after previous attempted break-ins.
