INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Police are investigating a shooting Thursday morning at a home just north of 23rd Street and Scott. According to FOX 4's Matt Stewart at the scene, three men forced their way into the home, awakening the homeowner. He went out to the main room where the gunmen confronted him and demanded money.

"At one point two suspects approached him with a gun and they were demanding money and whatever else they could get. At one point his wife walked in that direction to investigate the disturbance. The suspect shot at her. She fled. She was not hit. The son came down from upstairs where he was sleeping. They turned and shot him, striking him," said Tom Gentry, Independence Police spokesman.

Three suspects fled on foot. The victim was taken to the hospital, but the man's condition is unknown.

It happened at about 4:45 a.m.
