KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A one-year-old boy is in the hospital after he was critically hurt during a play date, and a 30-year-old man is suspected of abuse.

Prosecutors have charged John Sherman with abuse or neglect of a one-year-old boy. According to a probable cause statement, on Halloween night the child`s mom said she took her son to his dad`s house. Two days later, when the toddler`s father returned the child to his mom, the mom says her son was drowsy and had bruises on his back, chest and buttocks.

When she asked the dad what happened to their child, the dad said the one-year old was hurt at Sherman`s home. Investigators say Sherman later told police he saw his one-year-old daughter hit the boy over his head with a wooden toy hammer approximately five times during a fight.

Sherman also told police his daughter pushed the toddler off a couch.

By Tuesday, detectives went to Children`s Mercy Hospital and say they saw that the boy had multiple bruises to his body, a damaged liver and internal bleeding.

When FOX 4’s Robert Townsend stopped by the suspect`s home Friday afternoon to try to get a comment, a woman opened a door, said 'no' and then quickly shut the door.

Police say as of Tuesday the child was in critical condition. Sherman denied hitting the boy and remains in jail on a $100,000 bond.
