Excelsior Springs woman killed while on business trip to Mississippi

RIDGELAND, Miss. -- An Excelsior Springs woman was killed while on a business trip to Ridgeland, Miss. Thursday night.

WLBT reports that Kristy Mitchell, 49, was shot to death while walking to dinner at Logan's Roadhouse around 6:03 p.m. from her hotel. Mitchell was in Ridgeland in on a business trip.

Police told WLBT that when they arrived on the scene, Mitchell was able to describe the suspect. She was then taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center and rushed into surgery.

Mitchell later died at the hospital.

Investigators say the suspect fled from the parking lot at a high rate of speed after shooting Mitchell and struck a man who was walking near the entrance of the hotel with his vehicle.

WLBT reports that the man hit was a 59-year-old Memphis, Tenn., resident. The man was taken to the hospital to be treated for a broken leg but was later released.

Ridgeland police told WLBT that they arrested a suspect around 8 p.m. at an apartment complex. At the complex, police found the blue Ford Mustang described by witnesses and a gun with the same caliber.

According to WLBT, a motive has not yet been released.

WLBT reports that the suspect has been charged for murder in a gas station shooting, but has not yet been charged with the death of Mitchell or the aggravated assault of the 59-year-old Memphis man.
