KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- An 11-year-old boy that was reported missing Wednesday is safe, according to police.

Gavin D. Perez-Settgast went missing Wednesday afternoon, but family says around midnight he made contact with great-grandmother.

"He got mad, had his phone taken away, and he left," Gavin's grandma Kelly Coffelt said.

Coffelt added that his phone was taken away for missing a school assignment.

Police say they issued a missing person's report instead of an Amber Alert because Gavin was reported as a runaway.

"His father, my son passed away three and a half years ago," Coffelt said. "He has been dealing with a lot of issues. Ithink it is now time that we actually get him some kind of help and counseling."
