Lee’s Summit community mourns deaths of two h.s. students in car crash

LEE'S SUMMIT, Mo. -- Police say a driver's attempt to pass a car on Pryor Road ended in a fatal broadside crash Monday afternoon. Two passengers in a car that was traveling north on SW Pryor Road south of Longview Road were killed in the crash, and the drivers of the two cars involved were both hospitalized.

The crash happened at about 4 p.m. Monday.

Police say as the driver was passing another northbound car, another car approached in the southbound lane.

The driver, identified as Collin Carter, 18, attempted to return to the northbound lane, lost control  of a 2005 Nissan Sentra and skidded sideways while trying to get back into the northbound lanes. His car was broadsided by the southbound vehicle.

The passengers in Carter's car were identified as Nathan Giron, 18,  who was declared dead at the scene, and Courtney (Tanner) Rardin, 18, who died upon arrival at the hospital.  Collin, who is a senior at Lee's Summit West High School, is in the hospital with serious injuries, while the driver of the southbound car was hospitalized with minor injuries.

Nathan was also a senior at Lee's Summit West High School and Tanner graduated from Lee's Summit West High School last year.
