MERRIAM, Kan. -- A metro animal intake shelter announced on Thursday that they will be closing their doors after 50 years of service because of deplorable conditions.

The Merriam Great Plains SPCA’s Lost Pet & Intake Center, formerly known as "Animal Haven," located along 67th Street is expected to close its doors by Feb. 26.

"After being the center point of animal welfare in Johnson County for 50 years, the building just simply can't keep up with the volume of animals," Great Plains CEO Courtney Thomas said. "It's been deteriorating beyond repair for the past several years."

In 2015 alone, the Merriam "no kill" shelter treated more than 5,000 animals before they were put up for adoption.

During the shelter's last inspection the Department of Agriculture said the shelter needed massive updates, which were more than the shelter could afford.  Great Plains SPCA then decided to consolidate the intake and adoption centers into one.

"It is no longer a healthy place for people and pets; cannot support the growing number of homeless pets; and would not pass inspection this year," Great Plains SPCA said in a news release.

The Merriam building and land will be sold, and the money from the sale will go to shelter operations because the money from the sale will not be enough to build a new facility.

"The best solution and long-term goal is to have a new facility that would act as the regional sheltering solution for all of Johnson County's pets," Thomas said. "Achieving this will take residents speaking to city officials about the expectation for Johnson County's cities to play a role in the solution, locating a sizable building with ample green space for the regional sheltering solution, and raising funds through private donations and potentially a bond initiative. "

Great Plains SPCA will host an adoption special over the weekend to help current animals find a home before they have to close their doors at the Merriam location for good.

After the Merriam intake center closes, there will be three Great Plains SPCA locations.
