SHWNEE Kan. -- An overnight police chase in Johnson County ended in a crash in Shawnee early Friday morning.

Police say the chase started  near 74th Street and Lackman around 2:45 a.m. and ended nearly a mile away near 68th Street.

According to officers, the chase began as a routine traffic stop but when the vehicle refused to stop police pursued it. Police say the driver eventually crashed into a fence.

Police say the suspect then fled from their vehicle and as of 7 a.m. was still not in custody. According to Lenexa PIO Dan Friesen, officers know the identity of the driver so he expects charges to be pending.
