KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Police confirmed on Monday that a man has died after he had to jump to safety on Friday night due to a duplex fire near NE 107th and North Oak Trafficway.

Police on Tuesday identified the victim as 70-year-old Jerry Block.

Sources told FOX 4 that Block jumped, along with a child, who was also reportedly injured. The two were taken to hospital, where Block was later pronounced dead. The child's condition is not available at the time.

The Red Cross was at the scene helping the people who lived in the duplex and were displaced by the fire. Firefighters said the blaze started in the basement and worked its way up through the duplex.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
