SHAWNEE, Kan. -- Riverview Elementary took precautions Monday after a suspect in a domestic battery investigation fled from police into an area near the school.

Police said a "shelter-in-place" action was issued for the school, meaning the students are still going to classes and moving about the school, but can not leave school grounds.

Officers searched a perimeter near the 21500 block of West 47th Terrace in Shawnee with K9 units for a suspect described as a 24-year-old white male, standing approximately 5 foot 11, 140 pounds, with brown hair and a thick beard, and wearing a white KC baseball cap. The suspect was reportedly in possession of a shotgun when he fled police.

A DeSoto School District Public Information Officer told FOX 4 that there are two officers at Riverview Elementary as a precaution.

As school was dismissed, Shawnee police said the subject had not been located and the search had been suspended, but detectives are continuing to investigate the case.

Officers maintained a presence at the area schools during the afternoon release as a precautionary measure.
