KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- United States Senator Claire McCaskill from Missouri announced on Monday that she has breast cancer. Sen. McCaskill made the revelation in a Tumblr post, saying the cancer was detected during a recent mammogram.

She goes on to say that she expects to make a full recovery, and will be going to St. Louis for the next three weeks to receive treatment. She says she'll continue to post to her website how she would have voted on Senate matters, and will submit questions in writing for any missed hearings.

Sen. McCaskill was first elected to the Senate in 2006, and was the first woman from Missouri to get elected to the office. She was re-elected in 2012. She currently serves on the Armed Services Committee, Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and the Special Committee on Aging. She's the top-ranking Democrat on the latter two committees.
