INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Police say an officer suffered non-life threatening injuries on Wednesday night while responding to a disturbance call at the Deluxe Inn at 10301 E. 40 Highway. Officers responded to the call at about 7:20 p.m.

A suspect was arrested related to the shooting, and wasn't shot. Officer John Syme told FOX 4 that the disturbance call was for an assault in a room at the Deluxe Inn, and someone from that room fired a shot that struck the officer. The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment, and is expected to recover.

"We're extremely fortunate that it was only a non-life threatening injury, but it's still a very serious incident," said Officer Syme. "Every call can be volatile, it can change very quickly, and that happened tonight. What could be seen as a routine call escalated quickly and an officer was shot."

Investigators remained at the scene gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. Charges against the suspect will likely be filed in the coming days.
