INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- While an Independence police officers recovers from a gunshot injury, prosecutors have charged the man accused of shooting him. Brandon R. Mitchell, 23, faces assault and armed criminal action charges for allegedly shooting and striking the officer Wednesday night at the Deluxe Inn in Independence.

A probable cause statement describes that officers were sent to the Deluxe Inn for a domestic disturbance, and that Mitchell ignored an officer's command to stay out of a room. Mitchell persisted in his attempt to get in the room, and an officer grabbed him. Mitchell then attempted to pull away from the officer, causing both to fall into the room.

The suspect then allegedly fired a shot that struck the officer in the foot. Mitchell was then apprehended and handcuffed by the officer's partner.

Court documents go on to say that a woman told investigators that she called Mitchell for help at the Deluxe Inn because her boyfriend had assaulted her, and Mitchell arrived with a gun. She said that Mitchell fought with the officer because he was a felon and was armed. Furthermore, another witness who drove Mitchell to the motel said he had given him his Glock, and heard the gunshot after Mitchell and the officer went into the room.

Mitchell's bond has been set at $50,000, no court dates have been set for him yet.
