Cut off without warning, wine club customers demand answers from River Market shop

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A restaurant and monthly wine club abruptly closed its doors, leaving some customers demanding refunds and wondering when they will get their wine back. Cellar & Loft, in the River Market, has a sign on the door that says “closed until further notice.”

“The fact that they didn’t even give anyone a warning is really what I am most upset about,” said Jami Bailey, who has been a member of the wine club for about six years. Bailey said she and her husband pay $250 a year to rent a locker at the restaurant and another $35 a month for at-home wine delivery.

“No warning, so abrupt, and the lack of communication has been horrendous,” she told FOX 4.

There were more than a handful of other angry customers posting to the restaurant’s Facebook page on Monday. Several customers told FOX 4 the owners are fantastic people, so they are surprised to see the lack of communication. The phone number to the restaurant has been disconnected.

“I paid for our locker for a year and received two months of actual use,” one Facebook commenter posted.

Another commenter wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook page asking for a refund to the wine class she already paid for.

“We have signed up for the class next Tuesday, how do we get a refund?” the commenter wrote.

An e-mail was sent to members announcing the shop’s closing the same day it happened, giving them a matter of hours to rush to the shop and empty of their lockers full of wine. It said the business had been struggling since one of the owners had been in and out of the hospital. Members we spoke to on Facebook said they aren’t upset the business had to close its doors, just about the lack of communication.

“We’ve always appreciated them and all, we are just getting concerned,” said Bailey, who still hasn’t received her final monthly wine shipment.

After two weeks of wondering when they would be able to empty their lockers, members said they received another e-mail on Monday telling them they would have to wait until next week and then gather the items from the restaurant’s other location in Kearney, which they said also shut down without notice.

Some customers said they were also frustrated because the restaurant’s Groupon coupon remained available to purchase online, but the text doesn’t notify buyers that the restaurant’s doors are closed.

One yelp user expressed her frustration.

“Went tonight to use my Groupon and found a sign on the door written on a sheet of paper that they were closed until further notice,” she said, giving the restaurant a one-star rating.

FOX 4 reached out to the restaurant on Facebook but they would not provide any comment for our news story. Calls, texts and e-mails to a representative with the restaurant when unreturned. It’s unknown if the restaurant will reopen either location.
