KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Kansas City man is charged with attempted statutory sodomy and sexual misconduct after police say he was caught having sex with a 14-year-old girl on Monday in an abandoned home in Independence.

According to the probable cause statement, Cory Ruhnke, 26, was arrested at about noon after an officer found him naked and engaged in sex.

Someone had called police to investigate suspicious activity involving a male and female entering an abandoned residence near Truman Road and Sterling Ave.

When police arrived they told the two to stop what they were doing and asked for their identification.

When they learned the female was a 14-years old and Ruhnke was 26-years-old, they arrested Ruhnke.

He's charged in Jackson County with one count of Attempted Statutory Sodomy in the 2nd Degree and with one count of Sexual Misconduct or Attempt Involving a Child Less Than 15-Years of Age.

Crystal Gamble said she's lived in the neighborhood for 13 years.

"Very upset, because if I'd have seen it, I mean yeah, I'd have called the police," Gamble said. "That's the responsible thing to do, but I definitely would've been involved. I mean, our children are our future; we have to protect them."

Court documents revealed that Ruhnke was currently out on bond related to a burglary arrest last June.

He is now in jail on a $20,000 bond.
