JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. — The Board of Education of Unified School District 232 has named Frank J. Harwood as the new superintendent.

Harwood’s selection was a unanimous decision in the board meeting on Monday.

“Naming a superintendent is one of the most important decisions the board will ever make,” President Angela Handy said in a statement. “We believe in Mr. Harwood and are confident he will provide the superior leadership essential to the future success of our school system.”

“I am very honored and excited to become a part of the USD 232 school district and community,” Harwood said in a news release. “USD 232’s reputation for excellence is well known throughout the state and the region and I am so proud to help continue that tradition.”

Harwood moves to USD 232 from his current position as superintendent of Bellevue Public Schools in Bellevue, Nebraska (a suburb of Omaha), where he has served since 2011. The Bellevue district oversees 20 schools and more than 10,000 students, making it the fifth-largest school district in the state.

Unified School District 232 serves 12 schools and more than 7,000 students in northwest Johnson County, Kan., and employs more than 900 teachers and staff.

Harwood will take over from interim superintendent Ron Wimmer, Ed.D, effective July 1.
