KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- For Kansas Jayhawks fans, the party was going on right here in Kansas City on Saturday after KU clenched the Big 12 Championship title. Now the party moves to Des Moines for the NCAA tournament. Fans said they'll soon be making travel plans, but right now they're soaking in the excitement of Saturday's victory.
The Jayhawks have no doubt put in a lot of hard work to get to the elite level they're at, but now that hard work is about to be put to the ultimate test.
Rusty Coffman is a K-State fan, but he said KU head coach Bill Self makes it tempting to jump on the Jayhawk bandwagon.
"It makes it very difficult to stay a loyal cat-backer, just with his character traits and how he handles the team," Coffman said.
For some KU fans, a love of Jayhawk basketball runs in the family.
"My mom was going crazy. My dad was going crazy. They were both at Big 12, so KU's a big part of my family," one fan said.
Jayhawk supporters said there's no doubt plenty of KU fans will be flocking to Des Moines for the NCAA tournament. And a lot of folks are feeling confident the team can make a deep run.
"They got a great coach, and they've got eight great players," one fan said.
If the top-ranked KU wins their first game on Thursday against Austin Peay, they'll play their next game on Saturday in the round of 32.
FOX 4 is hosting a bracket contest for the tournament. Fill out your bracket and you could win one of several $50 Price Chopper gift cards, or the $450 grand prize.
