INDEPENDENCE, Mo. -- Independence police were involved in a nearly 7-hour standoff with an individual at a residence near 32nd Street and Englewood Terrace on Sunday.
Police on Monday charged the suspect, Darian L. Mickelson, 50, with unlawful possession of a weapon and 3rd degree assault on a law enforcement officer.
Police said they have been called to this home several times before. They were called in this instance with reports of a shed on fire on the property, believed to be set by the suspect.
No one was injured in the fire, but when police arrived on scene the suspect waved a rifle, and claimed to have a "fire bomb" and yelled obscenities at the officers. Police then secured the area.
Several people were removed from a neighboring home, and police shut off power to the neighborhood.
Neighbors said the man has a history of mental health issues.
After Mickelson was taken into custody, police said they found an explosive device near the main entrance to the home, along with more weapons.
