16-year-old dead after falling asleep while driving in Clay County, 13-year-old seriously injured

CLAY COUNTY, Mo. --An Excelsior Springs teen is dead after he fell asleep while driving Monday night.

The accident happened near 69-Highway and Northeast 112th Street in Clay County around 8:25 p.m.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says 16-year-old Nathaniel Perkins fell asleep behind the wheel. His truck then veered off to the left side of the road.

Officials say Perkins over-corrected and that caused the truck to overturn, and he was thrown out of the vehicle.

A 13-year-old was also in the vehicle. She is in serious condition.

Nathaniel was not wearing a seatbelt, the 13-year-old was wearing one.
