MERRIAM, Kan. -- Workers at the Great Plains SPCA in Merriam are amazed by the survival of a dog brought to their shelter.

“Foxy” the Chihuahua weighs just seven pounds, including a massive tumor she’s been carrying around. Preliminary testing suggests it could be a mammary tumor.

A good Samaritan found her near Wyandotte County Lake malnourished and dehydrated. The shelter wants to get her to a healthy weight, and evaluate her for other health issues, before removing that tumor.

"It’s a very large tumor and it’s very elongated for a dog this small. So we’re very glad she came to us for help, but she’s got a road of recovery ahead of her,” said Rachel Hodgson, chief communications director with the Great Plains SPCA.

"In the next few days she’s going to get a lot of TLC, a lot of food, a lot of care with us,” Hodgson continued.

The SPCA says there’s no word how soon “Foxy” will be adoptable. They urge anyone who interested in the dog to check out its Facebook page.
