LENEXA, Kan. — A rare celebration in Lenexa, Kansas, on Monday, as a couple celebrated 80 years of marriage. The party was held at the Sunrise of Lenexa Assisted Living Center, 15055 W. 87th Street.

Rena, 97, and Carroll, 99 were married in 1936.

“We got a Model-A Ford and drove about 7 miles to Scottsville, Kentucky, went to the courthouse and got a marriage license, went down the street and found a preacher, got married and come back home,” Carroll explained.

Ten months later, they had their eldest daughter. Then they were blessed with another daughter.

When FOX 4 asked them what advice they’d give a 24-year-old newlywed, they replied together.

“Take a lot and give a lot,” she said.

“Takin’ and givin’,” he agreed and added, “but she’s a wonderful lady.”

Carroll just celebrated his 99th birthday.
