SHAWNEE, Kan. — One person is dead after a crash on Interstate 435 on Sunday.

Police said shortly after 5 a.m., an SUV crashed into a bridge pillar on southbound I-435 and Johnson Drive, resulting in one fatality.

Police identified the driver as 54-year-old James R. Belfield.

The impact caused significant structural damage to the bridge pillar, which caused the left lane of eastbound Johnson Drive to be closed on Sunday until an in-depth inspection and repair work can be completed, the Kansas Department of Transportation said.

KDOT said traffic will be directed through the project work zone via signs and cones. Drivers should expect delays during peak commute hours.

There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.
