LUBBOCK, Texas — There are probably more than a few of us out there who have nodded off at work. For one sleepy FedEx employee, a seemingly harmless nap landed him in a bit of a bind when he woke up several states over.

An unidentified ground crew member was loading shipments on to an aircraft in Memphis on Friday when he somehow nodded off around 4 a.m., FOX 34 reported.

The man woke up as the plane neared the airport in Lubbock, Texas. He attempted to alert the pilots by knocking on the cabin door, but they wouldn’t open up. He was able to reach them by phone and was ordered to sit in a jump seat until they landed, Lubbock International Airport Executive Director Kelly Campbell said.

Lubbock police, FBI officials and Transportation Security Administration agents were all waiting for the accidental stowaway with a long list of questions when the plane landed at 5:30 a.m.

“The person was not arrested after police determined there was no criminal intent,” a statement from the City of Lubbock said. “The employee was released to local FedEx officials. There was no impact to aircraft operations at Lubbock’s airport.”

FedEx spokesman Jim Masilak said in an emailed statement that there was never any danger to employees or cargo.

“We are fully cooperating with investigating authorities,” he said.

No word yet on if the man splurged to have himself shipped FedEx SameDay back to Memphis, or if he waited the 5 business days for FedEx Ground.
