KANSAS CITY, Mo. — FOX 4 anchor/reporter Abby Eden, investigative producer Lisa McCormick, and photojournalist Jon Haiduk are honored to accept an Edward R. Murrow award for their FOX 4 investigative report on the sale of ammunition to minors. The regional Murrow award winners were announced on Tuesday.

In the national debate over gun control, little attention is focused on the sale of ammunition. That’s changing, at least in Missouri, in the wake of a WDAF FOX-4 investigation that revealed just how easy it is for a minor to purchase powerful rounds of ammunition.

Federal law prohibits stores from knowingly selling rifle or shotgun ammunition to anyone under 18, or bullets or clips for a handgun to anyone under 21. Our investigation exposed few stores follow those rules when our investigative team went undercover with a 16-year-old and discovered he had few problems buying ammunition.

Kansas Representative Barbara Bollier called our investigation “shocking.” The Republican lawmaker promised to explore possible changes to current Kansas law  – action she’s still investigating. Our investigation prompted Missouri Representative Stacey Newman to introduce legislation on February 11, 2016, to prohibit the sale of ammunition to minors.
