KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Guiness Book of World Records confirms it.
FOX 4’s School Day at the K is the world’s largest weather classroom, and the latest edition of the weather science show is no different, bringing over 15,000 students to Kauffman Stadium on Wednesday.
Baseball caps take a backseat to thinking caps. Students from schools all across the metro came to learn from FOX 4’s Chief Meteorologist Mike Thompson and his weather staff, as the home of the Royals is transformed into a giant classroom for the 18th consecutive year.
A day’s worth of overgrown science experiments looks pretty familiar to students from St. Thomas More School. As Thompson and his weather professionals conducted their experiments, students recognized their work, having performed the same experiments on a smaller scale in their classroom. Science teacher Sarah Pendergrast, who has taught at the school for eight years, says her students have been assuming the role of meteorologist for the day, often building professional weather graphics to show off their work.
“They could really relate to the experiments on the field. We did them on a smaller scale inside the classroom. Now, I’m sure they’re excited to do some of the things they saw today,” Pendergrast told FOX 4 News.
Weather balloons and stormchasing vehicles served as big classroom tools for thousands of young minds, including the kids from St. Thomas More, where the school’s athletic teams are called Cyclones.
“I learned about pressure and how liquid nitrogen works,” Emily Wynne, St. Thomas More sixth grader, said. “Ms. Pendergast had us learn about air pressure and that’s what they were demonstrating today and it was mostly the same.”
“It’s special because it’s a field trip nobody else gets to do — not a lot of other people get to do. They do it once per year, so it’s kind of special,” Ian Garcia, St. Thomas More sixth grader, said.
“We try to keep up with technology and science and offer any opportunity the kids have to learn about maybe some careers in meteorology,” Pendergrast added.
Many of those students stuck around after the weather science lessons to check out Wednesday’s baseball game, which began at 1:15 p.m. The Kansas City Royals lost badly to the Washington Nationals 13-2.
