LENEXA, Kan. --A major construction project is one step closer to wrapping up on Thursday.

KDot closed the I-35 and 95th Street interchange in February. Now, the first section of the project is set to reopen Saturday at 8 a.m.,  along Marshall Drive at 95th Street.

The milestone will provide access to many businesses along Frontage Road on the west side of I-35 -- including Mi Ranchito Mexican restaurant and Main Street Credit Union.

The I-35 and 95th Street interchange is one of the busiest in Johnson County.

KDot is reconstructing it with a diverging diamond configuration. The interchange and adjacent streets are opening in stages.

The city of Lenexa is thrilled the first section of the project is almost done.

"I certainly think it will be a time saver," said Steven Schooley with the City of Lenexa. "It eliminates a full traffic signal at 95th Street, so it will improve the traffic operations, reduce congestion, reduce delay on the corridor."

The next major opening at the interchange is expected in late June.

The entire project will wrap up in August.
