KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A 27-year-old Independence, Mo., man was killed in an accident on Interstate 435 past Truman Road on Thursday night.

Police say Trey M. Rooks was driving a black Harley Davidson north on I-435 when he went off the roadway into the grassy median to the left of the northbound lanes. Rooks was attempting to re-enter a lane of travel to head north on  I-435.

The accident report say Rooks accelerated and lost control as he attempted to get back on the highway, when he slid into the path of a tractor-trailer that was heading north in the middle lane.

The northbound lanes of the interstate had been completely closed, and have since reopened.

May is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's "Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month." Drivers are encouraged to be more mindful of motorcyclists, and riders are reminded to make themselves visible.
