KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- As the weather warms up and kids begin spending more time outdoors, it's important to practice proper sun safety. The Family Conservancy's parenting expert Mary Williams visited FOX 4 to talk about the damaging effects that too much sun exposure can have. Williams also shared ways to protect your children from harmful UV rays when outdoors.

  • Dress your children in light protective clothing such as swim shirts, hats and sunglasses
  • Plan outdoor activities around the early morning or late afternoon, when the sun is lower in the sky
  • Use a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher and reapply every 2 hours
