Man accused of shooting KCK detective also suspected in carjacking where metro mom’s arm was broken

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Police said the man accused of shooting and killing a KCK police detective is also accused of carjacking several people on Monday. Curtis Ayers is accused of carjacking a mother near the Legends who was driving with her two young children in her car.

The victim's family spoke to FOX 4 about that mother's injuries. Family members tell us that mother has a broken arm and was taken to Shawnee Mission Medical Center for treatment. They said she was driving with her children when she saw a car accident and stopped to help.

They tell us she had no idea the man at 118th and State was accused of shooting an officer. Family said Ayers demanded the mother's car and drove off with the kids inside, even after she offered him all of her money if he would leave the kids behind. Then, they told FOX 4 the mother held onto the seatbelt as the suspect drove away, but she eventually couldn't hold on anymore and he got away.

Eventually, police said Ayers ditched that stolen car in Basehor and carjacked another car. A man discovered the two children safe in the backseat.
