LEAVENWORTH, Kan. -- A 22-year-old Leavenworth man is shot and killed outside of a local bar. FOX 4 obtained surveillance footage showing the seconds leading up to the shooting.
Jonta Adams was pronounced dead on scene near a bar at 6th and Cherokee Street in downtown Leavenworth. This all started with an argument inside the bar and ended with shots fired outside all while cameras were rolling from a nearby business.
Family members cried in a parking lot stained with blood, creating a trail to where their loved one took his last breath.
“It's kind of hard to picture what was going through Jonta's head but now that we see the trail. It's kind of devastating to know,” Jonta’s uncle Bruce Adams said.
Family said Adams went to Woody’s bar on Cherokee Street Saturday night. He told his girlfriend he was just going for a drink and he’d be right back, but he never returned.
Witnesses said it started with an argument inside the bar, which trickled outside and turned violent. Surveillance footage shows a group of people running out of the bar as a man is thrown against the glass wall. A trail of blood led to parking lot across the street, where family believes Adams was hiding from the shooter.
“I think he was probably praying and running. Praying and running. Please don't let this be it.”
But it was. Adams was pronounced dead shortly after.
Family went to the scene right after they got the news, hoping to get some closure but they still understand how an argument could cost someone their life.
“I'd rather see a fight than someone pull out a gun and take your life for no reason. Over a couple of words. That's the part that hurts me the most.”
Police are still searching for the shooter and speaking with witnesses. If you recognize someone in the surveillance video or have any information call Leavenworth police at (913) 682-2583.
