KANSAS CITY, Mo. --A neighborhood is trying to rebuild after vandals set fire to a local park. Now leaders say it will cost tens of thousands of dollars to rebuild.

Budd Park along St. John and Hardesty is a park the community has helped build up over the years, with upgrades to security and new lights. Now those living in the area say the fire has taken them several steps backwards and caused nearly $65,000 worth of damage.

Just two months ago FOX 4 reported on the drop in crime in the area. That drop came after the Indian Mound Neighborhood Association received a public improvement grant to upgrade security.

Neighbors had complained about fights and even gunshots near this park where so many children play. $200,000 worth of safety equipment was added. Neighbors hoped the new safety features would be a step in the right direction.

Surveillance video is being reviewed to see if anything was captured that could lead to a possible suspect. Park crews are planning to demolish the rest of the structure by the end of the week.
